So long for now

Idaho to Spokane

Morning came quickly. A melancholy mood hung in the air as we packed up our final campsite of this segment of our tour. It was hard to believe that in a few days we would no longer be with each other everyday. The separation sadness mixed with knowing we will both working and saving towards our next big adventure makes for a bittersweet time.

We set off towards Coeur D’Alene and drove to Spokane. We decided to get a cheap hotel for the remaining days so we could pack, decompress and get ourselves prepared to say so long for now.

We had a quickly approaching deadline of 2pm for our rental car. We made the most of our time running errands, picking up bike boxes and returning the rental car to the airport. Thankfully, the cheap Super 8 had a free shuttle to and from the airport so we took advantage of that and grabbed a ride back to the hotel. Win win.

The next few days seemed to fly by. We ran an errand to Walmart on our bikes. Would you believe that a medium sized roll of bubble wrap is $23? I couldn’t. So I bought a few pillows for $4 each instead. Matt kindly hauled those back to the hotel. Let’s just say he had extra padding on his bike.๐Ÿค—๐Ÿคฉ Heck if we got aggravated with each other on the way back, we could have a pillow fight. ๐Ÿคช

The next day, we packed our bicycles. We were very concerned with the weight. American Airlines has a bicycle policy of 126 inches and 50lbs. Staying under these specs allows you to check your bike box for a fee of $30-40. Surpass those specs and it will cost a $100 extra. Thankfully, we both just came under spec. Matt at 49lbs even and mine 46.5lbs. Whew!

We spent a day in downtown Spokane via the city bus. Matt and I tried electric bikes for the first time. We sped around downtown on Lime bikes. Between the three of us, Matt, Rosie and I we must have said “This is so much fun!” at least 50 times while on the Lime bikes. Rosie was squeeling with joy whenever we sped off. ๐Ÿคฃ

Flight Day

Wednesday morning arrived sooner than expected. We loaded our bikes and luggage up on the cart and hauled it downstairs to the shuttle. Soon we were at the airport unloading them onto the free baggage carts. Big thanks to Spokane Airport for not charging to use the luggage cart!

Here we go!
Matt’s first flight with his bicycle.

After we made it through TSA, we headed straight for Starbucks for a strong latte. Then to our gate to wait.

Rosie loves cheese danish too!

Our first flights were together to Dallas. From there Matt flew to DC and flew to Tallahassee, Florida. Our layover was a just over an hour before we had to say so long for now. I Love Matt and will be missing him daily until I have him in my arms again. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ’”

I arrived into Tallahassee around midnight. I should have pre-booked an Uber, but the thought hadn’t crossed my mind until I was stuck curbside without a ride. Thankfully, an airport employee had the number to an independent van operator. He arrived just after 1am and took me to my destination, my storage.

Matt arrived in DC just after midnight, gathered his baggage and put his bike together. His checked bag seemed to have had a mishap at the airport. His bag damaged beyond repair and his bicycle arrived down the shoot with all the other luggage.๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ข. The only damage done was a pannier clip was broken off in the checked bag. I take full responsibility for this since I packed his bag. I put the bottom pannier with the clips down instead of up. Thankfully he was able to rig it with zip ties until he gets home. He is riding the C&O home beginning Thursday.

I am already missing him tremendously.๐Ÿ’”

No luggage carts to be found at Tallahassee Airport. ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ‘Ž
This was a heavy load to pull to the curb. Thankfully a gentleman helped me push it the final 20 feet.

Tallahassee, Florida

My first day back was filled with errands, naps and setting up my temporary stay until my rental is ready. Getting back into the groove quickly by working and saving for our next adventure.

My evening views for the next
7 days.

  1. Great adventure guys, nice to know there who people who enjoy the Endless Road like I do.
I’ll be up in the NE for the next couple of weeks visiting my children and grandkids, but then it’s down to FLA for a winter of hiking, paddling and of course bicycling.
Maybe we can get together and swap pictures and adventure stories.
    Take care and be well,
