Afternoon naps on the Potomac

Last night was rough.

Mr. Thumbs aka SST Stealthy Sneaky Thief kept us on high alert all night, even with all susceptible gear hung from a line. In the middle of the night. SST went to work on Matt’s front Ortlieb handlebar bag. He quietly released the magnetic clasp with his crafty thumbs. Rummaging through the handlebar bag, he dropped some packages of mustard and mayo on the ground as well as Matt’s wallet! What would SST need a wallet for? Thankfully, nothing was missing.

Mark, Matt and I enjoyed our coffee and entertainment this morning. A group charity ride was passing by, everyone heading to mile zero. There was cyclist who called out urination station ahead. I laughed as heard it. Then suddenly a charity cyclist stopped to use the port a john. The three of us already knew that was a bad idea, but we weren’t going to change his mind. He entered then moments later emerged looking pail and about to faint. He quickly got on his bike and rode away.   I’d would have liked to lure Mr. Thumbs into that port a john and left him in there to think about his actions. One can only hope he finds a new home where a cyclists food is not on his menu.

Matt and I said our goodbyes to Mark, then continued to break camp. In need of some ac, ice and cold water, we made a beeline to White’s Ferry. They had cold gallons of water available in the back cooler!  We decided to sit down for a bit when Rosie convinced us that it was time second breakfast!

Rosie loves French fries!

By the time we finished second breakfast, we were slipping into a food coma. We managed to get on our bikes and ride upstream to Marble Quarry where we quickly set up the hammocks for a good afternoon nap.

Rolling back to the C&O with a resupply ice and cold water.

Mid-afternoon we decided to go for swim to cool off.  Our swim was cut short by building thunderstorms. We quickly got our rain gear up and spent the next 45 minutes waiting out the thunder, wind and rain. The Emergency Weather Service report was calling for damaging winds, 1″ hail and 60mph winds.

Thankfully, we are situated on the river between two mountains and only got a little spray from the rain on our hammocks.

The rain let up and we started dinner. Not too much left in the pantry pannier 😀 but we made it work!

Matt’s camping charcuterie board aka the red cutting board. Fresh red onion from Betty’s garden, pepper jack cheese, steak and French bread

Angel Hair with Herb Clam Sauce Dinner for two $3

We cleaned up camp and headed to our hammocks. Both of us thankful to be on our way to a good nights sleep.

Thankful that Mr. Thumbs and his friend Shredder the Squirrel doesn’t reside at this campsite.
